Day 06 - A picture of a person you’d love to trade places with for a day.

This was a hard one for me. I love my life through all it's ups and downs and I wouldn't change a thing. Also, this one's a bit silly so I started thinking about what I would want if I traded places with someone for a day....a nicer car, warmer weather, less responsibility, more wild and crazy fun, people at my beck and call, access to fancy restaurants, wild clubs and exclusive parties, red carpet events, etc, etc, etc - I mean, it would just be for a day, right? And then it hit me....THIS is who I would trade places with :)

HA! HA! HA!

Happy Monday All :)

Birthday Party

We had the family over (minus Auntie D's gang - they weer sick) to celebrate Iz's bday a couple weekends ago. There was lots of laughs, yummy food, even yummier CAKES and tons of fun with family. Though, I have to admit, it just wasn't the same without Auntie D :)

SIX-years-old!

It was like Christmas all over again!

All done unwrapping gifts....surveying the carnage :)

Time for cake and ice cream!!!

IzzyBs cake -
lemon with blueberry filling and blueberry cream on top PLUS sugared blueberries. SO SO SO yummy!!!

Hubby's cake -
Carrot...always carrot :)

Blowing out candles!

Not the greatest picture of Mimi but she WAS cramming cake into her face so I did the best I could :)

We had fun! So glad that it wasn't a blizzard so Grammy and Bumpy and Auntie R could make the long drive down too!!!

Flashback Friday: The Big Reveal

So, I found out the other day that a friend of mine is expecting (more details on that later - for now I need to keep it on the downlow....I'm one of a handful of people that know) and it got me thinking about when I was pregnant with IzzyB. I wanted to share this story with you...

Hubby and I got married in April 2005. We did not have a traditional wedding - we got married in Vegas in April with plans to celebrate with our families later in the year. Why? Well, we originally had a wedding date set for September 17, 2005. We rented a hall and started looking at caterers and bridesmaid dresses and flowers and djs and we just decided that we didn't want to do it that way. We just wanted to BE MARRIED.  Skip the planning and the fuss and just do it! So we decided to go to Vegas for a few days, get married and then keep the hall rental in September and throw a big party to celebrate with our friends and family. Non-traditional? Yes. Perfect? Yes :) Anyhoo...

A mere 3 weeks (!) after the wedding I found out I was pregnant. Yep - what happened in Vegas did NOT stay in Vegas :)

That means that by the time our "reception" rolled around that fall I was 5 months pregnant. We had a pig roast, rented a karaoke machine and celebrated with everyone by eating and singing and being silly.

We had gone to the doctor about 2 weeks before and had an ultrasound. They gave us the opportunity to find out the sex of the baby but we had other plans. We had been talking all summer about whether or not we wanted to find out. We wanted to know but we wanted to be surprised at the same time. Believe it or not we were able to accomplish both! This is what we did:

When we went to the ultrasound appointment we brought three things with us - a small box, a "baby boy" bib and a "baby girl" bib. We gave all 3 to the technician and told her to find out the sex of the baby but to NOT tell US! Take the bibs and the box into another room, put the right one in the box and do whatever with the leftover bib. We took the box home and immediately wrapped it in pretty paper (to discourage peaking) and then brought it to our reception and put it in the basket that we had to collect cards and small gifts :) You've probably figured it out already but we opened the gift at our reception. Surrounded by family and friends we thanked everyone for coming and then told them about our appointment. I opened the present, pulled out the bib, screamed "It's a GIRL!" and everyone burst into applause! It was amazing!

It was so nice to find out about our princess with everyone around. Even if we weren't having a big party with everyone I think I still would have done something similar. Finding out in the office wouldn't have changed the outcome - we would still have been having a girl and still be thrilled about it. But I think finding out away from all that, surrounded by special people and being able to share the surprise was the best!

PS That was my favorite maternity shirt and I wore it CONSTANTLY even through the colder months with a long sleeved shirt underneath...I'm pretty sure I still have it so I'm thinking I might have to dig it out for my buddy :)

Smartie Pants

We knew when Iz started Kindergarten that she would excel at reading. It wasn't until we got her first "DIBEL" scores that we understood how much. DIBELS are assessments that are given 3 times a year - September, January and June and they focus on literacy skills.

Here are IzzyB's scores from September and January....off the charts!

*Click on the image to see it better!

Yes, you read that right - she scored 137 when the goal was 25! and they didn't even test her on the second section because she outscored it last time with a 61 (the goal for END OF YEAR was 40!) and her first assessment on the 3rd section she scored 61 on an end of year goal of 35! Sheesh!

Iz's teacher has been amazing in ensuring that Iz continues to be challenged every day in her literacy work. Iz goes over to the other kindergarten class for part of her literacy block to work with the other super reader over there and they've been making their way through a couple of workbooks as well as going up to the special reading room every so often (it's like a secret library in the school!). We were fortunate that Iz got a teacher who recognized right away when she was getting bored during her reading and getting distracted that it was because she needed to be challenged and not because she's a trouble maker.

We are so proud of our little smartie pants!

120

That's how many blog entries I posted last year. One hundred and twenty. The least amount in the three years I've been boring you all with my rambling. Why is that? I mean, I had no laptop for a few weeks there at the end of the year but that doesn't explain why I only had 6 entries in September and 5 in October.

Is it because I'm home alone most of the time now that Iz is at school all day? Is it because things aren't as crazy around here now that Iz can do so many things on her own?

In the spirit of trying to keep things fun around the ol' blog and keep people coming back for more I'm starting something new....again :) I stole this from someone's FB - it's "100 Things You Didn't Need to Know."

Now don't worry - I'm not going to focus solely on this for 100 days straight - I'll still be posting pictures of Iz when I've got good ones to share and if anything funny or exciting happens, you'll be the first to know....I'm just trying to find something to fill in the gaps.

Speaking of pictures...here's a couple for ya!

The Birthday Girl....looking so grown up!

6 Years

Dear IzzyB,

6 years old.

Unbelievable.

The past year has just flown by but it was sure a fun one :) Between preschool and dance we kept busy through the winter and spring and then we started the summer off by making a fun list which kept us busy until school started.

School. You're doing so well. Mrs. C couldn't come up with anything negative to say about you at the parent-teacher conference in November. You love school. You get upset when there's a snow day or you have to leave early/arrive late because of an appointment. Once we thought there would be a snow day and when you found out there WAS going to be school you yelled out "HURRAY!" I want your love of learning to never fade.

I've noticed that since you started school there's been a lot less blog entries and pictures. Part of the reason is because we just don't spend as much time together as we used to. You spend more time at school than you do with me :( That's been a bigger adjustment for me than I ever imagined. It's nice to be able to run errands and do all the boring stuff without you but on days when I stay home while you're at school I find myself missing you and wishing you were still home with me all the time. That surprised me but it's true. My whole world has been YOU for the past 6 years.

I love when you get home from school and tell me about your day. What you had for lunch, who you played with at recess and what books you read. Your reading is so far advance that you go to the other K class to read with their super reader! Keeping you challenged is a struggle for Mrs C but she has a plan and you're doing AWESOME!

You are an amazing little girl, Iz. Funny and sarcastic and silly and emotional and challenging and the most wonderful that that has ever happened to us. We love you so much and can't wait to see what the next year brings!!!

Love,
Mommy and Daddy

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

to my two favorite people in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD!
Love you!!!
*Bigger, BETTER post coming soon!

Annnnd...we're off....

....like a herd of turtles :/

So I started de-cluttering today. I put Iz on the bus, made a quick trip to the library then switched on some brainless tv and grabbed the bins off the shelf in the living room so I could go through them. These bins are full of toys that Iz drags out from her room but never brings back, drawings she's done, magazines, and junk. Plain old junk. I filled a clothes basket of things to go back to her room (books mostly) and I filled the trash with broken toys, scraps of paper and other miscellaneous things. I also threw a HUGE stack of paper into the recycling. As much as I'd like to keep every doodle and drawing and story Iz makes I just can't. I'm going to keep the best and toss the rest :)

Then....it all came to a screeching halt. I emptied the trash and discovered we have NO MORE TRASH BAGS! Argh! I knew we were low but sheesh! Anyhoo - Hubby's bringing home more and things will continue tomorrow. He's all worried that I'm throwing away his stuff but I'm not....yet :)

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

I have a new obsession to start the new year with.....

Ready for it?

SIMPLIFYING

That's it. I want to simplify things around here. I don't care how long it takes. I don't care how much I get done in a given day. I don't care if it takes me all year.

I'm simplifying our life. I want less stuff around us so we have more time to enjoy life.

When we got up Christmas morning and Iz opened everything, I looked around at all the stuff that came into our house that I need to find room for and I couldn't think of anywhere to put it. Here we are a week later and EVERYTHING we got for Christmas is still in the living room. To top it off, Iz's birthday is NEXT WEEK and there will be even more stuff coming into the house. Ugh! I just can't even wrap my mind around it.

SO, this is my year to simplify. Ahhh....I breath a sigh of relief just thinking about it.

My Simpler Life is going to be helping through the year - I was able to subscribe to weekly tips and download a calendar with a daily task for organizing and de-cluttering.

It all starts tomorrow :)

What are your plans for 2012???
